Villagers and Councilors Complain Over Lack of Commune Hall

KAMPONG THOM PROVINCE — Svay Pleung commune in Kampong Thom province has never had a commune hall for its officials to conduct business.

For some 15 years councilors have been forced to work out of a small area in a villager’s home. There’s no room for the commune chief, councilors and staff to administer the constituency of some 6,500 residents.

PHNOM PENH — More than 400 newly elected opposition commune chiefs took up their posts this week after winning at the local elections last month, the first time in history the Cambodia National Rescue Party has held strong power in local politics.

In Bavet, Election Ushers in New Blood

SVAY RIENG PROVINCE — Phouk Prathna is one of the youngest local councilors elected to run a local authority in this month’s local elections.

At just 25 years old, the Cambodia National Rescue Party councilor for Bavet in Svay Rieng province, near the border with Vietnam, was one of four officials elected on a CNRP ticket here.
